"Why don't you filthy Communists go back to Canada!" That is what Tom Peterson yelled at us near the end of the Peace Vigil on Veteran's Day.
The Peace Vigil meets every Saturday near the post office on Main Street. We hold signs with anti-war sayings on them, signs about President Bush, or signs about the Iraq war. Some quotes we've used are, 'You cannot win a war as you cannot win an earthquake', and 'Patriotism means supporting your country, not your President.'
People often yell at us while passing in cars or walking by on the sidewalk. They scream insults, swear, or give us the finger. Once a man called Dad a fairy! We don't seem to be reaching them. Sometimes, however, they honk their car horns in support and give us the 'Peace' sign.
On Veteran's Day, people did not understand our message. We supported our troops, but not the war. We want to bring all of the men home.
When the people yell at us, we don't yell back. We say, "Thanks for the opinion!" or "Thanks for the feedback!" We don't attack them. We use peace.
